As part of our commitment to supporting the industry, we ran a pilot Purpose Programme which was a big hit and is now part of our membership benefits package, so we are talking to those people who took part about how it was for them.

Q Why did you sign up to the programme?
A Personal story telling is of real importance when you want to lead and the programme proposed an approach of developing that story.

Q Was it what you expected?
A To be honest, I did not really know what to expect, other than the possible outcome – which was the personal purpose manifesto. The programme did push me out of my comfort zone, because it requires you to think profoundly about your core values, the way you perceive yourself, the ambition you have, etc. As such, it is a great milestone because normally you don’t really think in a structured way about these topics, however having a clear view on them is critical in order to be clear about your personal story, which in turn you need to engage with teams and stakeholders.

Q What did you get out of the programme?
A A clearly structured personal story, which I was able to share with friends and colleagues. As mentioned by Andy, it’s something which will continue to evolve but the first version is there!

Q What would you say to someone considering signing up to the programme?
A Two things: 1) creating your personal story is really important for any leader and this approach works and 2) be open minded, because you will need to “go deep”.
